They have the same intense boy-dog energy and joy. Sam outlived her companion by over a year.
I had fallen in love with herding dogs, so I began a rescue search. Two adults and their eight puppies, abandoned in Barkersfield and rescued by Central California Herding Dog Rescue www.cchdrescue.org/
showed up on my news feed about a month after Sam died.
I picked up the two-month old pup in San Luis Obispo, hence the name Louie. Elvis wasn't a practical name to call out at a park, so that became his middle name.
Half Border Collie, half Australian Heeler, his head cocks as he tries to understand what I expect of him.
Will Louie have a companion some day? At this point I'm too aware of the difference between 18 y/o Sam and a puppy. At five months, there is time to see what comes.
I don't expect him to replace anyone. Each dog is unique.
But I believe that the legacy of a great dog is that you love another.
He is another. and I am falling in love.
